Freedom After 50: 7 Practices to Help You Stop Hiding and Start Growing

We all have parts of ourselves we would rather not see.

Maybe it is that flare of anger that catches you off guard. Or the shame that creeps in after a conversation. Maybe it is that quiet voice that says, “You are falling behind,” even when you are doing everything right on paper.

Most of us push those parts away. We keep them in the dark, hoping they will stay quiet so we can stay in control. But they do not disappear. They go underground. From there, they start shaping our decisions, relationships, and even our sense of identity.

That is what we call “The Shadow”. And if you want to grow—not just perform or produce—but truly grow, you are going to have to face it.

When you do, this is called your “Personal Growth Currency”. It is not just about what you know or how much you have done. It is about how well you know yourself. It is about how willing you are to be honest with the parts of you that have not caught up yet; the parts you have managed, masked, or minimized to keep moving forward.

If you are still hiding parts of yourself, you are not growing. You are just curating.

I Know Because I Have Lived It.

For years, I did what many of us do. I over-functioned. I led teams, coached clients, and carried the weight for other people. I stayed productive. I stayed purposeful. I stayed busy with good intentions.

But somewhere along the way, I lost track of what I had not dealt with. The anger I buried; the fear I covered with clarity; the sadness I rationalized with service.

On the outside, I looked like I was growing. Underneath, I was maintaining a version of myself that felt acceptable, but not whole.

Everything began to shift when life forced me to slow down. Through loss, illness, and surrender, I began to hear what I had spent years avoiding. I did not change overnight. But I turned toward the truth. And that is where transformation began.

Not another breakthrough. Not another mountaintop insight. But something quieter and more enduring: integration.

This kind of growth does not show up in metrics. It shows up in how present you are with your spouse; with your kids; with your calling; with your own heart.

That is why we created the Shadow Integration Practices worksheet. Not as a tool for analysis, but as a framework for honest attention. Want to get access to the worksheet now? Here are seven invitations. One for each practice in the worksheet. Each one is a small door into deeper growth. Want to get access to the worksheet now?

1. Notice When the Shadow Speaks

Ask yourself, “When today did I overreact, feel shame, judge someone, or shut down?” These moments are not failures; they are signals. They are your inner life asking to be seen. Instead of pushing them away, ask, “What part of me needed to be seen or protected in that moment?” You may be surprised by how often that question leads you somewhere true.

2. Inventory the Roles You Have Been Praised For

Write down the identities you have been applauded for. Maybe you are the wise one. The loyal one. The spiritual one. The rock. Now ask, “What do I hide to keep that role intact? What would I be afraid people might see if I let that image go?” This is not about discarding the role. It is about expanding the truth behind it.

3. Build Safety in the Mirror

Go to the mirror. Look yourself in the eye. Say, “You do not have to pretend today. I see you. I forgive what you have hidden. You are safe with me.” You do not need to perform for your own reflection. Eventually, your body and your soul will believe you.

4. Own Where You Are Out of Alignment

Pick one area where your words and actions do not align. Where you say one thing, but live another. Do not justify it. Do not rush to fix it. Just name it. Then write this: “Even this part of me is held in love.” Because guilt creates hiding, but compassion invites change.

5. Let the Roles Fall Away

Sit in stillness. Ask, “Who am I beneath every role, every fear, and every expectation?” Let yourself imagine removing every label. Not to erase yourself; to return to who you were before the performance began. Then say, “I am hidden within and cared for by the Source of all Life. That is enough.” This is not about detachment. It is about wholeness.

6. Ask Someone to Reflect You Honestly

Find someone who knows you well and is not afraid to tell the truth with kindness. Ask, “Where do you see me pretending? Where do you think I am not being honest with myself?” You may not like the answer. But if it comes from love, it may be exactly what you need. Do not defend. Do not deflect. Let it sink in. Then choose what to do with it.

7. Reclaim the Trait You Have Judged

Think of a quality you have rejected in yourself or others. Maybe it is anger. Maybe it is laziness, pride, or emotional sensitivity. Now ask, “Where does that show up in me? What was it trying to protect? What strength have I buried along with it?” What you thought was a flaw may actually be part of your wisdom. The Currency That Does Not Show Up on Paper

This is the real work of your Personal Growth Currency.

It is not about reading more books or stacking more credentials. It is about becoming a person who is no longer afraid of their own reflection. It is about presence. Integrity. Wholeness. You cannot lead others past where you are willing to go. And you cannot build a life of impact on a foundation of hiding.

So stop editing yourself. Use the worksheet. Ask the hard questions. Hold the mirror steady. And when you come face-to-face with the part of yourself you thought you had to bury, say this:

“You do not have to pretend today. I see you. I forgive you. You are safe with me.”

That is the moment growth begins. That is where freedom takes root. That is how the currency compounds.
